Séminaire atlantique d'histoire de la médecine

Joint Atlantic Seminar for the History of Medicine 2014

Call for Abstracts

The Johns Hopkins History of Medicine Department is pleased to announce the 12th annual meeting of the Joint Atlantic Seminar for the History of Medicine. It will take place on October 3-4, 2014 in Baltimore, MD.

JASMed is an annual gathering of early career historians of medicine and public health, coordinated by graduate students. It was founded in 2002 with a mission of fostering a collegial intellectual community and providing a forum for sharing and critiquing graduate research among peers. We welcome all participants and encourage interdisciplinary conversations.

We would like to continue previous efforts to expand the audience for this conference and include insights from other disciplinary backgrounds. As such, we are calling for abstracts from scholars working on problems in health and medicine in all allied fields, as well as in the traditional fields of history of medicine and public health. The problems addressed could fall within the history of health and healing; medical ideas, practices, and institutions; illness, disease, and bodies, from all eras and regions of the world.

Abstracts should be no more than 250 words and should clearly state the purpose, thesis, and principal findings of the paper to be presented. A panel of graduate students from different institutions will review the abstracts.

The deadline for abstract submissions is June 1, 2014. Abstracts must be submitted online here.

The conference will be held at the Institute of the History of Medicine, home to the oldest academic department of the History of Medicine in the English-speaking world. It will consist of 12 graduate student presentations, a faculty panel discussion, and time for socializing with peers and colleagues.

We urge students whose papers are accepted to seek financial support from their home institutions to participate in the seminar. We hope that a limited amount of travel support will be made available to students whose home departments are not able to subsidize their travel; however, we are uncertain as to the extent and availability of such funding at this time. Information about availability of funding and how to apply will be sent to those whose proposals are accepted for the program.

We look forward to welcoming you to Baltimore in October!
